Description

This is a freshwater softshell turtle. Her leathery smooth shell is about 17 inched long (43 cm). Males only grow to half this size. They can rest in shallow water and their fully extended neck, can reach 10 to 12 inches, to the waters surface, to breath. Older females develop a lichenlike mottling along the shell. Info from the Complete Field Guide to North American Wildlife. Photo taken at the Wakodahatchee Wetlands, just west of Delray Beach, Florida. Taken with my old Minolta. Zoom works and you can see some of the algae growing on her shell. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

They don't seem to have the clawed feet that the lake turtles do, very cool to see this! Great shot, Dana!

Good thing she's afloat. Would never see her sitting on the bottom of that murky water! The floating posture with the legs all out brings a smile with it, great image!

Tortoise stretched out as far as it can in this cool capture, Dana. The water doesn't look too clear.

A lovely photo of this turtle underwater. You have caught her just as she is about to take a breath too. They are such facinating creatures to me, but I have never thought of them as having soft shells or is it that they are just softer than the sea ones.
