Description

“Daylight” is a word that can only be described in a purely local manner. There’s nothing truly universal about it. What is daylight on a world like Mars, devoid of a natural magnetic field? The concentric, onion-layer structure of radiation belts cannot exist there, and so daylight is a fatal thing. And what of Serapis? It is the most remote of Human worlds. It exists, though there are many who say that it shouldn’t. Daylight there is dark as Serapis circles a dim, brown dwarf. Though I was born on Khem, I have traveled to more than a dozen worlds: most, I must admit, within my own star system. Twelve worlds and hundreds of moons, all circling a single star; but, daylight on each of them was distinct. Daylight on Khem differs from daylight on Earth, on Mars, on Serapis, on One-Oh-One, and on every other world upon which humans have left footprints. Daylight on Khem—the moon of a larger, gaseous world, girdled by rings—is intense: it is lit by the system’s central sun, and the hazy glare of a neighboring reflection nebula. Daylight on Khem is what I think of when the term springs to mind: it is brilliance marked by both a sun and a nearby nebula. I have seen daylight on Earth, and on other worlds, and on each of them, I find it to be lacking…dim…unexciting. —Anonymous The single surviving entry of a lost journal found on Tethryn * It’s been 900 posts since I joined Renderosity: 900 posts since I sat in a kitchen in Prague, listening to Czech radio, or watching subtitled episodes of Prime Suspect on Prima…one of four free channels on basic Czech television. In looking back, I can see that I’ve taken numerous journeys: some physical, some mental…some artistic, and may of them, most of them, emotional. In looking back, I can see that for as far as I’ve gone, I have a lot farther to go, and so I’m looking ahead…to voyages to places I have yet to discover, and to people I have yet to meet. I’m looking ahead, as well, to other things, too…and one of those things involves a patient photographer in Moscow. As always, thank you for viewing, reading, and commenting: thank you, especially, for giving me countless reasons to share 900 posts here on Renderosity. **FULL ZOOM works best for this one**

What a fascinating concept of something we take for granted...only you could put it in front of our faces like this, my friend. Perfect for this milestone, which I hope is only an early one of what your career will hold for us all. We're all richer for sharing your worlds!

Your stories and images have left a larger impact on me than the number "900" would indicate. Thank you for sharing your vision with us, dear one. It's truly a pleasure. I'm looking forward to hundreds more!

Firstly, congratulations on reaching this milestone. I must say, I always look forward to your postings, stories and musings. Opening up rarely considered ideas or concepts and making them a personal experience. And this one is no different. How daylight is part of half our lives we don't stop to think that it may be regarded as a threat on other worlds. Common place concepts will no doubt mean very different things elsewhere and with other beings who will likely perceive the universe differently from ourselves. And you make it so personal with this journal entry. A small piece of some individual's life that might well have been lost to time like the rest of his thoughts. How many of us hope that our words will be read a thousand years from now? Very compelling. Excellent art work too. This world does look as though it has been mercilessly scorched for eons. Perhaps an over abundance of gamma photons has bled the atmosphere of much of its water and nitrogen. Life would have to be very tough to endure there.

Congratulations on the big 900! Pretty swanky! I never know what to say about things like this, but 900 of anything is impressive. And to keep up the quality level through nearly one thousand posts is even more impressive. You have a wonderful gallery. Congratulations again!

Dear Anonymous, You've had many great adventures here. Thanks for taking all of us along with you. Different daylights...what a concept. I've experienced daylight in Alaska at 3am but that's hardly another world...although some might not agree:) Talking about Russia,...yes, I could almost see it from there! Outstanding artwork to illustrate your short story.
