Description

The pilot boat returning after dropping the harbour pilot off at the ship as she comes in to dock at Walvis Bay. You can see the channel marked by buoys, red on the left of the path, green on the right. These colours denote the approach to the harbour, port (left and red) and starboard (green and right). Ahoy, Clive Clive

Here it's red off starboard, green off port, coming into the harbor. :) They remember it by "red right returning." I suppose that's one reason they don't let those globe-trotting container ship captains manouver their own vessels into port! LOL!

Learned port and starboard and the channel marking colors when I had a 14 foot runabout at age 14. I felt like an old salt at the time:) You had a great vantage point for this set of harbor pictures.

You are right Tara, but that (red, right, returning) applies only in the northern hemisphere. It is reversed in the southern hemisphere where this is taken. Nice shot! The "red, right, returning" rule also applies to going upstream in rivers, like the St. Lawrence in Canada for example.
