Description


The Egyptian Goose (Alopochen aegyptiacus) is a member of the duck, goose and swan family Anatidae. It is in the shelduck subfamily Tadorninae, and is the only extant member of the genus Alopochen. This 63–73 cm long species breeds widely in Africa except in deserts and dense forests, and is locally abundant. They are found mostly in the Nile Valley and south of the Sahara. It has also been introduced elsewhere: Great Britain, the Netherlands and Germany have self-sustaining feral populations, the British population dating back to the 18th century, though only formally added to the British list in 1971. In Britain, it is found mainly in East Anglia, in parkland with lakes. It was officially declared a pest in the UK in 2009. With their pale head and underparts with dark eye-patch and pink legs, these alien waterfowls are decidedly odd looking ! In December 2011, I found these in Nil-Saint-Vincent (Belgium) when looking for the Grey Phalarope … L’Ouette d'Égypte (Alopochen aegyptiacus) est une espèce de canards de la famille des anatidés. C'est la seule espèce du genre Alopochen à ne pas être éteinte. Elle appartient à la sous-famille des Tadorninae qui comprend notamment les tadornes. Cette espèce habite l'Afrique au sud du Sahara ainsi que la vallée du Nil jusqu'à Assouan. L'Ouette d'Égypte a été introduite en Angleterre, les Pays-Bas et l'Allemagne où elle est commune aujourd'hui. Des oiseaux issus de ces populations sont de plus en plus souvent observés en France, en Belgique et dans d'autres pays d'Europe.
