Description

Lake Yellowstone is the largest body of water in Yellowstone National Park. The lake is 7,732 feet above sea level and covers 136 square miles, with 110 miles of shoreline. Average depth of the lake is 139 feet and its deepest part is at least 390 feet. It is the largest freshwater lake above 7,000 feet in North America. In the winter the ice is nearly 3 feet deep and covers most of the lake, except for the hot springs areas. The lake freezes over in early December and remains frozen until late May or early June.
