Description

This is the Old Agora at Ephesus, in western Turkey - the people's agora. This was literally downtown, the commoners market; there was another agora for the rich higher up on the side of the mountain. I liked this spot because it was off the beaten track of the tour groups and so even in crowded Ephesus I had this beautiful area all to myself. This is an area of Ephesus that has not been restored at all since it was destroyed by an earthquake in the 4th century A.D. It was in a natural state and I liked that. This agora was originally built in the 1st century B.C. as an open air market. It was restored in the early 3rd century A.D. by the Emperor Caracalla. This is a sidewalk on the outside of the market that eventually led down to the harbor. There would have been a shop between each of the colonnades - this is where the people came to buy their everyday food and clothes. Having now been in the Spice, Silk and Grand Bazaar's in Istanbul, I can just imagine the busy bustle of this place some 2000 years ago. Previous

Wow! love the postwork you did on this scene. I feel like I'm there with you way back when, watching the sellers haggle with the shoppers over the price of the goods.

Always a feeling of timelessness with places like this, used and inhabited for so long, their bustle and business lingers on. Wonderful treatment on the image Roxy - it adds to the timeless feeling of the place. Thanks for sharing these!

I can imagine the unbroken structures and people crowding the avenue. Great shot and perspective. The sepia certainly adds and 'oldness' to the scene.

It's just nice to read the story behind the image. You gave life to this desolate place by the information you wrote. A picturesque description that you can almost see it come alive. Wow!

This is just beyond words, Roxy! Looking at this photo, I can just FEEL the history and spirit present here. The sepia tone you've given this is just perfect. What a lucky lady you are to have had the chance to stand in the midst of so much history and legend. It must have been almost overwhelming... I'm sure you have to original color capture - what a spectacular background it would make for your classic renders! (hint, hint)
