Description

Some asked why the city of The Hague (Den Haag in Dutch) replaced -fantastic- old bridges by dams in the period 1955 - 2000. The answer is.... More travic over land. More cars... Water was not concidered important anymore. If there was enough money, they closed complete canals (or put them under ground) That happened a lot around 1900 (because water in a time before sewage systems smelled.. it happened in many cities in The Netherlands and Belgium)... in the second half of the 20th century they just turned canals into lakes by putting wide (travic) dams every were.. The current inhabitants and city-government regrets it .. but to turn things around and reopen canals and rebuild bridges is hard to do in times of crisis. So.. to get on the former canals (now lakes) you have to wait for ice...

Wonderful shot here Chris, it seems almost every capture from your beloved city is breathtaking. Thanks so much for responding to my question about the reason they replaced old bridges with dams, it really was helpful. I agree with you that so many of those old bridges had real character, and it's a shame they were removed. Hopefully when things calm down they will consider opening some of those water ways back up in the future.

LOOKS like someone tried to do something like a snow angel out there - lol... still, looks like a parking lot. interesting canal stories... water does stink if people let trash build up in it - as long as the water moves, I think the odor stays under control.

Beautiful shot. We have a neighborhood that still has bridges over the center of the road where a creek used to run. Same thing. They covered it up. Such a shame.

I wondered why canals were blocked .. the price of unthinking progress .. and to return things to their former glory .. an even higher price. Sigh
