Description

One of the two photos that formed the photo collage I posted yesterday. It was taken at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, which happened to have a special exhibit of dozens of varieties of exotic jellyfish when I was visiting several years ago. I thought the sunburst pattern, which can be seen on the one that serendipitously tipped it's "head" towards my camera, was quite beautiful & amazing. I didn't make a note at the time of the name of this particular variety, so I did some searching online. I'm not sure, but I think these may be Atlantic Sea Nettles. I did find out that groups of jellyfish are often referred to as blooms (hence my title), which I wasn't aware of. Some interesting facts about jellyfish, courtesy of Wikipedia: "Jellyfish are found in every ocean, from the surface to the deep sea. Some hydrozoan jellyfish, or hydromedusae, inhabit freshwater; freshwater jellyfish are less than an inch (2.5 cm) in diameter, are colorless and do not sting. Large, often colorful, jellyfish are common in coastal zones worldwide. Jellyfish have roamed the seas for at least 500 million years, and possibly 700 million years or more, making them the oldest multi-organ animal."

Beautiful creatures! I liked this in your montage, and I like it on its own. Nicely done!

A fine sight...but not when you're swimming:) Nicely done and now I can add this type of bloom to my vocabulary.

I little tip to try when you are photographying subjects like this where you are seeing a lot of different species at one time is to take a photo of the signs before you take your picture I learned this the hard way when I had taken probably hundreds of photos of flower in this huge garden and then got home and of course I couldn't identify any of them. Now I always take a quick shot of the little name plates near a subject.

This is like eye-candy - I love this image ... to say the least it's illuminating - the light is certainly on! (on the one that has tipped it's head towards you), indeed, nature at it's best - as seen through your eyes and camera-eye. top marks, BB
