The mother stood embracing her child and wondered where to begin. She had to move back to the dilapidated family farm. As she looked around the attic, so many things were in need of repair. First, she should board up the window to try to keep the drafty old farm house warm and begin cleaning and planning to plant fall vegetables so they would have food. She could do the food preservation and canning and sell some to the local store to earn a modest income. Her sister would be arriving to join her within the next month or two, together, they could carve out a meager living ... until things improve. She carried her baby downstairs and placed him in the crib, covering him with a warm blanket and went out outside and began chopping wood for the fire place. It would be a hard cold winter, as she thought of surviving the Great Depression.
