Description

As we walked through the village I didn't see a lot of people except for the half a dozen children that typically followed us whenever we arrived anywhere. I assumed the adults were out working. As we approached what turned out to be the center of the village, however, we began to see groups of people. We had arrived at the local market. Here you can see our local guide, Pol, explaining the wonderful delights of Southeast Asia's most beloved and vilified fruit, the Durian, also know as the King of Fruits. The spiky soccer ball being held up by the woman next to Pol is the selfsame Durian. The image below shows the fruit more clearly. Those of you who followed my series on Indonesia have already been introduced to this heavenly fruit. Those who love it describe it as sweet and fragrant with a custard-like consistency and a faint scent of almonds. For the rest of us the smell has been described variously as rotten onions, turpentine and gym socks. The odor has led to the fruit’s banishment from certain hotels and public transportation in southeast Asia. For me the taste was a wonderful mix of sweet melon and motor oil. Mmm-mmm, tasty!

I have a friend who swears durian is the best thing in the world. I'll pass! Anything you have to get used to might not be worth it in the long run. Your images are wonderful, though!

For someone who cannot believe that Avocado is meant to be edible, This might be a no-no. The women are so dignified and handsome...not something I can say about some of the stallholders in my local market.

Mark, the pictures are absolutely great!! Right out of life ... wonderful! Yes, yes....the Durian...I've heard of this fruit and you have but not convinced me to eat them. She looks a cool. With a chain gives a good weapon (Morning Star).

Very interesting images and narrative I think I'll pass on trying this one. it does appear to have the qualities necessary for an antipersonnel weapon

I often shop at the Asian markets here because I like their expansive variety of meats and spices. I have seen these in their produce department and never quite understood what to do with them so never bought one. Probably a wise move on my part. :-) These pictures are very interesting and there is so much in them to see.

Great pictures! I never have seen a Durian, from outside looks like a "Guanaba", a fruit that we have here, but the open fruit is totally different!
