Description

I was standing by the McDonald's on Hindley Street, Adelaide, waiting for an opportunity to take some night pictures. Next to me was a young man with a can in his hand. The two police officers came down the street, the police station is not far away, and were passing us. I kind of was watching them and was thinking to myself that I hadn't seen a mounted police officer since I had lived in New York City. There they were a common sight around Times Square and Central Park. The officers had probably gone 20 to 25ft passed us when they turned around and came back and called the young man over. After a brief exchange, the young man emptied the contents of the can in the gutter, and put the empty can in a trash receptacle. He was just about to return to the building side of the sidewalk where we had stood before, when the officer called him back, and after another brief exchange the kid produced an ID and shortly thereafter the officer pulled out a pad and wrote him a ticket. The whole process was so civilized that I didn't hear a word that was said, despite the fact that I stood right next to them. The officers also didn't mind that I took a picture. When this was done the officers turned around and proceeded down the street again. I thought to myself if this had been in Phoenix, there would have been a crowd, somebody would have gotten angry and accused the officers of police brutality, or profiling, and most likely shots would have been fired. This picture was taken on 22 December 2011, Sig... I do not know how I could take out the halo effect caused by the reflective tape. But the reflective tape on both, the horses and the officers, made me take the picture in the first place.
