Description

With the huge main engine section of NASA’s MMS-1 spacecraft and its attached Lower Rotational Module now safely secured to the Orbital Shuttle Atlantis via the two sets of robotic arms in the shuttle’s cargo bay the crew of Discovery can now close-in for the next phase of the mission. Moving to within twenty feet of the upper end of the Lower Rotational Module with its attached end-cap unit, the crew bring Discovery to a halt and send out a tight-beam radio signal which detonates the ring of explosive bolts which secure the aerodynamic end-cap unit to the end of the rotational module. As the fragile bolts fracture, the force of the small but powerful detonations separates the end-cap unit from the module and sends it on its way toward re-entry and a fiery end in the Pacific Ocean far below. With the end-cap unit now gone Atlantis is now free to transport its cargo on the next leg of its journey to the Von Braun Space Platform. To be continued next week..

Again, a great image of what could be, and thank you for so skillfully reminding us of it. But the fact remains that, for now, it is more important to every politician of every stripe in the USA to pay TRILLION $$ protection money, aeized from the citizenry of the shrivelling middle class, to Harvard MBA-bearing Ponzi scheme criminals on Wall Street, than it is to enage in the sort of exploration of space that might eventually ensure that our entire species does not go the way of the dinosaur.
