Description

Aww, isn’t he cute? One of the goals of this project is to push myself out of my comfort zone. Coming from a portrait mindset, macro photography is hard - the subjects are tiny and uncooperative, and it’s difficult to get nice light. The solution to the last problem is a softbox - I don’t have one, but I used this template to build a little prototype. It certainly helped, but the highlights are still harsher than I’d like. Note: I'm running a Project 365, aiming to shoot and post a new photo every day. I'm posting them here on a 2 week delay - if you want to follow this as it happens, see my blog: Lucis+Umbra - photography by c.j. kerr Previously:

Looks super to me! I love macro photography. Once my camera comes back from the shop I will be focusing on that for sure (no pun intended). :-)

A stellar job. I can see how the brighter lighting would be needed here because those multiple eyes are not easy to find in darker lighting. Outstanding macro work.

Actually, brighter light is critical for a different reason - t-stops. Where most photographers are familiar with f-stops, fewer understand t-stops. Long story short, lenses transmit less light at close focusing distances, and this was very close indeed. I used a 12mm extension tube on a 1:1 capable macro lens, bringing the minimum focusing distance down to about 5cm from the front of the lens. This shot was pretty close to that - the spider in the photo is about 8mm long. So whilst the geometric f-stop was f/6.3, the effective f-stop in terms of transmitted light, the t-stop, was more like f/22. In the shade of a bush late in the afternoon, ambient light contributed next to nothing to this exposure. (The same effect makes the viewfinder quite dark - focus and composition is tricky when dealing with live subjects at >1:1 magnification)
