Description

It was the Diamond Dakota's fourth day at Carnot Bay. March 6th 1942- proving how thin the thin Khaki line really is, a pair of Wirraways dropped supplies by parachute, including a note attached to a box of cigarettes (ah, yes, its the good old days!). Help was on the way. Yesterday the marooned group had endured an explosive "lecture" from a huge Japanese flying boat- its crew convinced northern Australia was crawling with Allied fighters... This was the reality. Wirraways... If Ivan Smirnoff, Hero of Another Russia, could have seen those "Wirraways" with modern eyes he could be forgiven for thinking that the "Carnot Bay Airshow" is really scratching around for machines- dressing Harvard trainers up as RAAF light bombers... except funnily enough the Wirraway actually IS a license-built North American "Harvard" trainer. What more could you want for the mini-series guys?! The rescue party walked overland from the Mission. They arrived at the Pelikaan in the wee small hours of March 7th. Ivan got quite a surprise when he finally arrived at the Beagle Bay Mission- the men he'd sent on a "do- or-die" walk SOUTH to Broome had managed to walk NORTH, and got to the Mission before him. That "Down-Under" mistake probably saved their lives. After Pelikaan's survivors rested up for a couple of days. they started the long journey by road and air out of the desert and in and out of various hospitals. Days later in Melbourne, Ivan had visitors. Ivan was clearly NOT busy in the driveway of a Palace washing a brand new red sportscar with champagne. Yet his visitors were not satisfied at all by his explanation... "We dropped it on the beach..." But if Ivan Smirnoff didn't have the missing fortune in diamonds? Then who did...? To be continued... thanks for viewing and comments etc. Assets, Neiwil's DC3 of course Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation CA-1 Wirraway. Modelled in shade 10.5. The texture is that of RAAF "training" aircraft operating in Malaya earlier in the war

To be fair, through history we know Ivan Smirnoff to be an honorable man but I suppose the visitors would have rasied eyebrows at his version of events. I suppose we will have to wait for the next installment to find out who'd end up living the good life. Great series all round and the CA-1 Wirraway is fantastic!

"Carnot Bay Airshow" :-) Hell! I'd walk there to see Wirraways and that 'Mavis' flying about. The typical 'business mentality'....not "glad so many of you survived, it must have been awful", but rather "were's our package"? and it's timeless, I met the same mentality only last week... Brilliant image Brian, love the Wirraway model.I now find myself wondering what became of the 'Pelikaan' after this, recovered, detroyed, still there????
