Description

Ice in the harbor of historical Marken, Holland. Opposite to Urk, on the other site of the Ijsselmeer, you find a little Island named, Marken. This is another historical place, and tourist attraction. Marken is simply a museum village where people still live. Now a days the island is connected to the main land by a causeway. Because the wind was from the “wrong” direction, this time no drifting ice around Marken. The little harbor was still covered with ice creating a beautiful scenery with the characteristic wooden houses and historical boats. Photo taken 16th of February 2012. Real overcast, without any spark of the sun!!! Thanks for viewing, and your lovely words on my previous postings; comments are always welcome. Have a very nice weekend Henk From Wikipedia the following info: Marken is a peninsula in the IJsselmeer, in the Netherlands and a former island in the Zuiderzee, located in the municipality Waterland in the province North Holland. It is the name sake of the Markermeer, the body of water which surrounds it. The former island is nowadays connected to the North Holland mainland by a causeway. Also, Marken is a well-known tourist attraction, well-known for its characteristic wooden houses. The island and its inhabitants were the subject of considerable ethnographic interest in the late nineteenth century because it was so isolated from the mainland with roots to Friesland. In the 13th century a group of monks from Friesland moved to the newly formed Island.

This brings back memories. I spent time there as a teenager...though in all honesty, I spent more time in Urk, pursuing a rather dangerously cute, extremely tall person. Nothing came of that, but as a result of that one foray I have fond memories of the IJsselmeer region, and especially the architecture there. I've since returned to Europe, but not back to Urk or anywhere else in Holland, and it's high time that I did so. This is a fantastic, evocative shot. I love the crispness of it.
