Description

...came across a well done aviation render in the Vue Gallery titled, Sweet "Pea". ...Click Here to see Sweet "Pea" by steelrazer. ...working through some of my past files, I came up with several photos I had taken of this Boeing P-26 "Peashooter" in 2009 at the National Museum of the US Air Force. It is a very unique aircraft first flown in 1932 by the US Army Air Corps. ...what's with the nickname "Peashooter" you ask? Well, even if your didn't, lol, here's the answer: The P-26 was nicknamed the Peashooter because it has no visible armament (it had two machine guns on the floor of the cockpit shooting through the propeller). It did, however, have a long tube gunsight just forward of the windscreen that appeared to be its only armament. ...And, happily, you can see the long tube gunsight in my photo above. OMG, at this POV I didn't realize the P-26 had such a weird engine cowling up front. Great color and detail in this picture of the old timer, Bill. And, I posted several fotos on RR of the Peashooter I took in March of 2009.

I like this view. You have a way of shooting a plane that makes me feel like I'm the pilot, about to hop into a plane I know well. In fact, I've never flown a plane and had never seen this one before you posted it. Nicely done! Now I'm off to see what inspired you to bring this one up. :)

The idea of shooting a gun through a propeller was surely first imagined by Wile E. Coyote!!!!!!!!!

Another of my favorites! Great Shot, by the way! And this aircraft itself is remarkable, being such a high quality repli ... or, rather ... new manufactured example of the type. A lot of original components were used. Though the P-26 was a dream to fly, the high landing speed (before flaps came on the later models) coupled with 1)narrow landing gear/poor brakes, 2)main wheels well forward of the CG while in a three point stance and 3)a not very authoritative steerable tailwheel meant groundloops (what a shopping cart pushed and released backwards does) resulting in nose-overs became common enough to result in a very tall headrest (covering an overturn structure; oh, and armor as well) becoming a prominent feature early on. I would LOVE to fly one. Planes of Fame at Chino flies theirs occasionally and is something to see.

Man..... It must have been a real bear to try to peer through that tube to line up a shot! Now you don't even have to put eyes on your target... Super shot of this fascinating plane, Bill!

2 Bill's, 2 Peashooters....great companion pieces.Love the detail in this Bill, very handy for 'upgrading' the model texture.Interesting that they stencil the airfield name on the plane...is that in case the pilot gets lost? :-) LoL
