Description
This is the parade ground of Fort Laramie, looking from the Generals quarters, as it is today. The long brown building in the left distance is the soldiers barracks. This was once a very busy place with settlers coming through, stocking up on provisions and resting from their hard trek.

It looks well situated - you could see anyone approaching quite easily. Not quite what I expected to see - a youth of playing cowboys! Clive

When I hear the term "fort" I think of palisade walls and fortifications...this looks so open and flat! Maybe it was different long ago. Excellent capture!

This is a great shot! The composition is really good, you've captured the feeling of flat, wide land, and the color is gorgeous. I'm smiling at those folks who want it to look like it did in the movies. Here's a bit from the Wiki on Fort Laramie ... it hasn't been anywhere close to that movie version in over 120 years: After the completion of the transcontinental railroad, the fort's importance gradually decreased [and] it was decommissioned in 1890. [...] In March, 1890, about 30 cavalry soldiers and civilian mechanics under the command of Lt. C. W. Taylor arrived at the fort and removed doors, windows, flooring, and any other material from the buildings that was thought to be of value to the government. The last soldiers left Fort Laramie on April 20, 1890. All but one of the structures were sold at auction to private citizens, and the entire military reservation, which was nine miles long and six miles wide, was opened up to homesteaders for settlement on October 5, 1891. I found all that to be quite fascinating ... hope you enjoy the bit of history, as well! :)

I have been disappointed by Fort Laramie, when I visited it in 1993, I thought it was a like a "movie" fort all in wood :)))
