Description

In the closing days of Imperial Japan's annexation of the Netherlands East Indies, nine Mitsubishi A6M2 fighters, newly based in Timor, arrived to neutralise Broome's tiny airfield. The attacking pilots were astonished to find that Broome's Roebuck Bay had filled overnight with more than a dozen Allied flying boats. They immediately set about destroying the Dorniers, Catalinas and Short C-class machines assembled there, catching most in the act of refuelling, and still packed with refugees from Java; Allied airmen and the wives and children of Dutch servicemen. Its a salutary reminder that not every soldier's family is safe "at home." Residents of Broome did what they could to pluck as many survivors as possible from the blazing harbour, but at least 88 people are known to have died in the attack. 70 years ago, today... March 3rd 1942... Broome, Western Australia A re-render of an older Vue scene which I've brought out for the 70th anniversary. Do24 "X-1" and Short C-class "Corinna" modelled in Shade. Thanks for viewing...

As Rob points out it's not remembered as much as it should be but you've done a great job of bringing it to everyones attention. Very good render of a very sad occasion.

How many remember that Australia was attacked several times, and that Australian land (islands on the north coast) was occupied and civilians living there either imprisoned, chased off or massacred? Well done image! Keep up the good work! :-)

Great 'do-over', and fitting rememberance of dark days that,as others have already said, are often overlooked.
