Description

HMAS Yarra, the sixth of six Huon Class minehunters built in Newcastle, Australia was commissioned on 01 March 2003. Like her sister ships, Yarra's unique hull design is shock resistant with a low magnetic and acoustic signature. This allows the ship to operate in hostile mine environments. When mine hunting, propulsion and precision manoeuvrability is achieved using retractable thrusters. The Ship uses variable depth sonar to search for and prosecute mines. Upon detection, the ship deploys the remotely operated Mine Disposal Vehicle (MDV) or clearance divers to identify and neutralise mines. The MDV, equipped with a searchlight, camera, sonar and disposal charge, is controlled from Ship's operations room. In this photo, she was escorting the Queen Mary 2. That's a sweet little ship and I would rather ride on it than the one behind. That said, I'd rather eat on the big one, heh heh!

A fine modern HMAS Yarra...I went and read about the other three ships by the same name and found HMAS Yarra (U77) to be particularly interesting. Well done.

A FINE shot of a modern looking ship.. Not often we see in service Naval ships on Rendo.. Well done.. It is with equally sad feelings for my pathetic Country and your own NOT sad Country, that I read 'Built in Australia'.. Well done!.. Anything 'British' now, is Generally made 'of the shelf in the Far East.. Not exactly very 'secret' is it! Our new 'Fleet Replenishment ships' are off shelf jobs.. Sad... British shipyards are laying empty.. Men with no jobs.. Economy in ruins and we give a multi billion pound order to Wherever! sad Good post and sorry for moan Andrew... Keep it up.. Rob

An interesting and beautiful little ship. With your description, I assume the copper below the anchor is to protect the hull - shock resistant suggests some form of composite material in the hull, but not anchor resistant! Old ships of this type were usually clumsy and ugly. This one looks smooth, modern, nice. Good photo from a classic angle for photographing ships (due to length, so one can get the whole thing into the photo). Keep up the good work! :-)
