It looks like someone wrapped twine or a wire around the tree at one point, and it's grown over the invader. Excellent capture, and I love the spout! :)

Interesting bark patterns. I guess auntietk could be right, but I have my doubts as I've seen similar patterns on many trees around here & doubt that they've all been wrapped...
