Description

Sphaeralcea ambigua. Also known as Globemallow and Sore Eye Mallow (because if you get any of the hairs in your eyes, they may make the eyes sore). Desert Mallow rarely forms carpets. The most I have seen is strips along roadsides. It is more likely to bloom in a drier year, because it is a perennial rather than an annual. The seeds are said to be edible, and it is emollient and can be drunk as a tea. This is a fairly large plant in this photo, and the location was on the road to Lake Pleasant, northwest of Phoenix, Arizona, USA.

A nice bright color for the desert - you might say, "a site for sore eyes".
