Description

The morning of Sunday March 18, 2012 started out well in San Diego, Ca. We got up at 6am, loaded my bags and ate breakfast at IHOP. My wife drove me down to the San Diego airport arriving at 8am. She dropped me off and I went to check in. It was raining and 60 degrees in San Diego. What happened to warm and sunny California? The check in at Frontier airlines went smoothly. I exchanged my E-Ticket for a real ticket and a boarding pass. The TSA security check was quick and efficient. I went to my gate to wait for the plane. I decided to check the temperature in Denver, Co and Rochester, Mn. It was 80 degrees in Denver and 75 degrees in Rochester. Talk about a reversal of roles. Rochester is usually 0 degrees on a warm day this time of the year and San Diego is sunny and in the 70s. I boarded without problems and was in an isle seat that I like because of my long legs. My flight from San Diego to Denver was uneventful. So I settled down to wait 1½ hours for my flight to Minneapolis/St. Paul at gate 28. Around 3pm, I noticed that gate 28 still said Las Vegas which is what it said at 1:30pm. I checked with the desk and she said that the Minneapolis/St. Paul flight was at gate 50 and had left 5 minutes ago. I said I did not hear any announcements that the gate had been changed and she said We do not announce gate changes for Frontier Airlines since they change so often. You should check the boards to see if there are any changes. I said "What am I supposed to do now." She told me to go to the assistance desk between gates 18 and 17. I know I should have checked the boards when I arrived. My only excuse is that I have not flown in a long time. I arrived at the assistance desk and they tell me there is a flight at 7:55pm to Minneapolis/St. Paul, but it is full and the next flight is 8am Monday morning. They could give me a standby ticket for the 7:55pm flight. I took the ticket and went to gate 30 to wait the 4 hours and 45 minutes. I looked at the board to make sure that the gate did not change for my flight, but what do I see, 8 screens and the fourth screen ends with Milwaukee, the fifth screen is off and the sixth screen starts with Portland. So how am I to keep track of the gate for Minneapolis/St. Paul flight?? I decided to not worry until an hour before the flight. About 5pm I was hungry so I went looking for food and found the Quiznos just a quarter of the way back up from where I was. $7.85 for a small chicken sandwich! I checked the boards by Quiznos and my flight was still at gate 30. Back to waiting, but I noticed my phone was about out of power. I had noticed younger people setting on the floor at a telephone kiosk which had power outlets on it. I waited my turn to set on the floor and charge my phone. I used to like setting on the floor, but not anymore. Then I noticed that on the back of the kiosk the phones had been removed and were close to some chairs. So I waited until someone left a chair and moved there to charge my phone. Much more comfortable. About an hour before my flight was to leave. The Minneapolis/St. Paul flight showed up at the bottom of the fourth board, yea! It was still at gate 30, but the gate currently said Indianapolis. I decided I should call Rochester Direct, a shuttle service from Minneapolis/St. Paul airport to Rochester downtown to tell them I would be arriving at 10:46 pm since I had missed my flight. They said that the shuttle left the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport at 10:45 pm and could wait up to five minutes for me. She said that she would call the driver and tell him I would be riding the shuttle. About a half hour before my flight was supposed to leave, the gate changed to say Minneapolis/St. Paul. I went up to give them my standby ticket as soon as possible. The agent said they were still processing and loading the Indianapolis passengers and would process my standby ticket as soon as they finished with the Indianapolis passengers. When they finished she would call me up. I sat down by a couple going to Indianapolis and told them my story. He said that their flight had changed gates THREE times in the last 1 and half hours. They finally finished loading at 7:45 pm. I went up and asked the agent if she still have my ticket. She pointed to the other agent and said that she was processing my ticket. It would just be a minute. The flight crew loaded and the flight crew that was flying standby boarded. THEN they called my name and gave me a boarding pass with a seat number on it, 4A a window seat, but I was glad to have a seat!! The plane left ten minutes late. Frontier did not have 1st class seats, but do have some seats with more leg room and this was one of them, Great. We arrived ten minutes late and I rushed over to Rochester Direct, but the shuttle had left five minutes ago. I went to go get my checked luggage. It had arrived at 6pm. I got my luggage and asked the agent where I could stay and she suggested the airport hotel. I decided I did not want to pay $200-$300 to stay in a hotel for 7 hours and 45 minutes which would work out to about 5 hours of sleep if I was lucky. I told her I would just stay in the airport waiting area. She said that the most comfortable place was the balcony above the ticket area. I went there and it was comfortable. Their normal chairs have arms between the chairs, but these had the arms removed so you could lie down. It was above the activity on the main floor. See my picture. There was a lady sleeping on one set of chairs already and a couple that were taking turns sleeping on another set of chairs. I managed to fall asleep about 2am, but was awaken by an electric cart at 2:30am. I did not get anymore sleep that night. I got up at 5am and went over to the shuttle area to wait for Rochester Direct. He finally arrived at 6:30am and made coffee. I said I was there to take the 6:55am shuttle. He processed my credit card and gave me a $42 ticket to ride the shuttle then told me that it was full. If someone did not show up, I could ride, but I would probably have to wait for the 8:15am shuttle. I was feeling so tired. I asked where I could get some coffee; I do not ever drink coffee. I was thinking that maybe the coffee he made was for customers, but NO he told me to go down stairs and there would be a coffee place there. I bought a large cup of coffee with lots of cream and sugar of course, I was more awake. Guess what! NO ride for me!! After he left, I was looking around and saw Rochester Shuttle, another shuttle to Rochester. It takes you right to the door of your house for $22 less!! Plus it was leaving in fifteen minutes. I took it and was delivered to my door step at 9:30am. Rochester Direct only takes you to a hotel in Rochester then you have to take a taxi home. Rochester Direct plus the taxi cost me $42 for the same ride!!
