Description

The Barbary ground squirrel (Atlantoxerus getulus) was introduced to Fuerteventura from the African Spanish colony of Ifni as a household pet in 1965. Having escaped they have thrived in a natural environment similar to their homeland. Without predators however, their numbers have increased to an estimated 300,000 and are now a threat to the island’s endemic species. Its erradictaion is seen as impractical on Fuerteventura, with efforts concentrated on its spread to other islands (Gran Canaria and Lanzarote). L'écureuil de Barbarie (Atlantoxerus getulus) est l'unique espèce du genre Atlantoxerus. Ce mammifère est un rongeur, végétarien de la famille des Sciuridae. C'est un écureuil terrestre très reconnaissable avec ses courtes oreilles, son pelage de couleur dorée comme les sables du désert et ses rayures noires sur le dos. He is precious! He looks very much like the ones around here. Wonderful that he posed for you. Half the beauty of photography is when the photographer can catch a moment like this, and is able to take advantage of it. Photography is very much an art of found objects. ;)
