Description

This started out as a photo of part of a wooden beam. I thought the grain pattern & coloring were interesting, but after playing around with it for a while, it just wasn't working. So I started adding other photos I've taken recently & using Photoshop layer blending options & came up with this. I don't really like classifying my images in the "Photo Manipulation" genre as I don't think it's really a Genre, but probably should have been given it's own Gallery. Because photo manipulation is a technique that is more like a medium that you work in than a genre & can be used to create work in many genres, like abstracts, fantasies, atmosphere/mood pieces, etc. I probably would have classified this as surrealism, but it seemed too far removed from the original photos to call it anything but photo manipulation... Great idea...moving from something not working to something that works very well by adding layers of other photos.

Thank you for coming to my gallery, your comments were very kind. And among the 'gifts' was discovering your gallery as well. About PhotoManipulation, I agree with what you wrote here: that intense photo-manipulation is really an art unto itself. (It's an art in the same way that photography is, when it's been heavily transformed in the darkroom, with multiple layers, photo upon photo, etc. That was photo-manipulation before Photoshop...) It's really graphic art, even digital painting & collage. This is a beautiful piece, where the woodgrain is the basic 'music', and the trees & branches & moon, eye, etc, blend into the music like solos. Fine work with hues & their combination, and with making the lines & branches come alive. I was a painter before I started to photograph, and to my eye this is a very graphic piece, pure photo-manipulation, and scintillating art as well.
