Description

The command crew of the SDF-1 have always known that if there was one place in the entire long journey home that would make a perfect place for an ambush by the Zentraedi it would be the region of space which marks the mid-point between Jupiter and Mars – the asteroid belt. This vast region of space, made up of quite literally millions of tiny worlds, will render the SDF-1’s space radar virtually useless and render flying conditions virtually impossible for the Veritech fighter squadrons tasked with the job of protecting the huge battle-fortress from harm. It therefore comes as a pleasant surprise for the crew that they manage to navigate the vast belt of rocks without once encountering the aliens who have been trying so hard to reclaim the SDF-1 for so long. A pleasant surprise that is until the battle-fortress makes its exit from the belt. Waiting for the SDF-1 as it exists the vast ring of rocks are massed formations of Zentraedi cruisers, fighters and battle-pods. The battle-pods present a particularly ominous sight to the crew of the battle-fortress as they remember them as being used by the aliens in their initial ground assault on the SDF-1 many months before when the fortress was still land-locked on Macross Island and their reappearance seems to indicate that the aliens plan to use them to penetrate the SDF-1’s interior in an attempt to once again retake the fortress from its inhabitants from Earth. With such a vast array of forces waiting to assault the SDF-1 from all sides there seems only one hope of defending the battle-fortress from the harm, use of the ships main gun, the huge cannon capable of firing a beam of massively destructive energy thousands of miles in length and hundreds of miles in width. What the large of majority of the crew, and all its unwilling inhabitants of the SDF-1 do not know is that when the battle-fortress made its first space fold jump many months before the section of the ships vast interior which links the ships plasma energy generators to the main gun firing section simply vanished and despite many attempts to locate it within the hull of the SDF-1 it is still missing to this day. To counter this occurrence a desperate plan has been conceived to use the battle-fortresses modular transformation capability to re-format the huge ship in such a way that elements capable of allowing energy to flow from the ships generators to the main gun firing circuits move into place to allow the main gun to be fired and hopefully save the ship. With no other option available the captain announces to both crew and passengers that he is ordering immediate “Modular Transformation” to allow firing of the main gun. As the vast ship starts to reconfigure for firing of the main gun the devastation within the hull is huge as entire sections shift from one location within the vast hull to another. Many are killed who have not had the opportunity to reach the safe areas within the ship which will not be affected by the vast changes which are taking place, but the captain knows that he has no other option if the ship is to survive and the many thousands which survive the change in the ships shape are to reach Earth safely. As the Zentraedi start their attack the final elements of Modular Transformation swing into place and the main gun firing circuits flash “green for go”. Vast energies which have been generated in the ships engineering section are directed into one colossal blast which issues forth toward the Zentraedi totally destroying in one shot the entire enemy formation which has been so carefully assembled to assault the battle-fortress. As the realization that they have once again survived an attack by the forces which seem so determined to retake the battle-fortress sinks in, so does the realization that they still have many millions of miles to travel before they can finally reach home.
