Description

Me, in a store window, a couple years ago. 8 blocks from home. I'm the blue "ghost" in the window. I actually have better color, and in real life I don't look like I walk through walls. (Or scare little children.) However, I am bald, and I do have hair on the side of my head that looks like I've been on electrodes for appr 40 years. And that's my camera---my first camera! And that brings me, at long last, to a Grand Revelation: The person who gave me my first camera! (I had to bribe this lady and offer threats: But at last she allowed me to reveal it:) My very first camera was given to me by the one & only Helle, (Helanker, here). She decided I had an eye for photography---even though I'd only painted & drew before that---and she gave me one of her cameras as a gift. I insisted it was too much, but she didn't pay me any mind & sent me the camera all the way from Denmark! And she changed my artistic life. So when Bill (bmac62, here) lent me his DSLR, he became the next link in that chain: I've been ushered into a great art by two wonderful artists! And with the help of a number of you who encouraged, helped, suggested & critiqued me into, I hope, a decent photographer: A huge thank you to all! And Helle: Thank you for getting me started on one of the most wonderful arts of my life! (Btw, I accept cameras, cars, furniture, grand pianos, jewelry, medium sized animals---just medium---and a lot of other things. Call, I'll give you a list.) (Man, my sense of humor leaves a lot to be desired...)
* * * I'm still going gallery by gallery, but I'll get to everyone of you. (I'm slow, but I'm missing no one.) A terrific week to all! Mark (Taken with Helle's Nikon E2000, 2 megapixels & a heart of gold. Thank you again, Helle! From your blue ghostly friend...)

This is a wonderful image Mark, and the perfect one to represent you reflecting back to the past. It was so kind of Helle to recognize you're potential for photography and then very generous of her to provide you with that first camera. It was equally kind of Bill to take you the next step down that road by loaning you his DSLR in order to show you the new heights you might reach. As always it was a pleasure to read your amusing thoughts and thanks for providing me with a smile first thing today :)

What do you mean, become a decent photographer? You are a natural, man. By the way, I should have been very tempted to but that little creature in the window. Thinking about Helle, the entire contents of this window look very Scandinavian.

Wonderful layers of vision here, Mark; and I never for a minute thought you were really blue, or that you'd been hooked up to electrodes for more than a month or two ;P I for one am very happy that Helle recognized your talent and gifted you the camera, since you're more than a decent photographer, you're an artist in any medium you happen to be working in!

DECENT!!! LOL ! Look at this and call yourself "Decent" photographer :O I agree with Andrea. You are a natural talent. I KNEW IT! :))) You only got to "smell the cork plug" that day you tried out Taras Camera for a few minutes. You said you didnt know what you were doing. Well, it took you a few days having your own camera and you made wonders. You have done it ever since. Before a few weeks were gone, you made better shots than I ever did with that camera. You are the best. I Love this colorful sharp and fun shot. Superbly done Mark :))) And thank you. :) Bill Loaned you an awesome camera an Olympus, which is MUCH better than the little Nikon and you did even greater shots. What a beautiful gesture of Bill. :-) I have an Olympus now and I know what e fine camera it is. Didnt take many days, before Mark could teach me some excellent tricks on my OWN Olympus, I have had since November 2007. Embarrassing but true :) When Mark is studying something. He does it fully. Not like me, I just try things out... A manual.... what is that? ;)

The intense blues & reds & contrasting geometry (circular vs. linear) of the items in the window & the background architecture set this apart from the standard "reflection in a shop window" shot. Great composition...

Thank heavens Helle finally gave you permission to share! She did SUCH a good thing, sending you that little camera. You did more with that baby than most people can do with a big fancy setup! It's your eye, my friend. No matter what medium you embrace, your eye is at the center of it all, and you turn out fabulous work. LOVE the Minnie Pearl price tag hanging from your hair! Howwwww-deee! I'm so proud to be here! LOL!

A myriad of lush rich colors dominate this scene, Mark, and maybe my sense of detail is diminishing, but it took me a long while to make out your configuration reflected in the window. I see the camera, your hands, arms, and a blue haze above that. That said, great clarity and lighting effects in this shot. And, kudos to Helle for sending you the camera.

How ghostly you look in this great photo and that was a super gift from Helle, she certainly found a great home for her camera. It just shows you what hidden talent you have as I thought you had been taking photos for many years as your images are always so clear and well thought out. I would be tempted to buy the little blue alien in this image too he looks so cute.

Such a unique photo and at first I didn't see you, and then you appeared. The glowing blue light really adds such an intriguing and haunting aura to this amazing photo, as if you've captured several dimensions all existing simultaneously. You are truly an explorer behind the lens, capturing your vision as only you can, Mark, with a delightful combination of thought, imagination and spontaneity. CC

HAha... this is awesome. Sort of a "Where's Waldo" image. I found you right away and the trick is to find all the other pieces! There are so many incredible layers here it is hard to root oneself from a realistic standpoint. As I take stock of my vantage point I notice the reflection of the tree in the window. (Or IS that a REAL tree?) I do love your lamp head ornament and it seems you have a price tag, too. Mini Pearl would be proud. The blue owl could be your mini-me... but he is surrounded by circles and you are surrounded by squares. (No pun intended on people that hang out with you. lol ) But truly - some serious depth here as I peer through the windows and then refocus to see the base of the closest white bowl. The color contrasts are great, too. What fun. So glad you found this art form. It suits you quite well.

Ditto what everyone else says; it's the nut behind the wheel who drives the dang thing!! I started with a 3.2 megapixel and the 7 mp I have now scared me to death when I first got it. My new Canon is still in the box; that's how fast my learning curve is. This is a GREAT shot, everything about it is just wonderful--you DO have the ye!!

Ah yes...a rich, deep image that draws me right on in. Helle knew. We all knew. And now you know:) There's a Proverb from the Bible (OT) that I like: As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. Or put another way, As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.

This is such a fun shot - but I think you're WAY underpriced!!! There are some great comments here, and they all agree - with your artistic eye, you would have had to work hard to NOT be a superb photographer. Thanks Helle, you've done the world a great service! (BTW, I've sent the items in your wish list in a separate email, but you'll have to find a 3D printer at your local bureau. Please beware, the medium-sized animal is a mountain lion...)
