Description

Delft is another one of my favorite cities. It's famous for it's distinctive blue pottery & as the home of the great painter Vermeer. It has a charm & serene beauty that has drawn me back to visit several times. This photo originally had a trashcan in a prominent spot on the street that ruined the mood for me. I removed the trashcan using Retouch Pilot. Could have used Photoshop, but it would have been a more tedious process. I've left the trashcan in the thumbnail in case anyone is interested in comparing. Is this cheating? Would it have been cheating if I had physically moved the trashcan out of the way before I took the picture? It may be to some, but I'm not that interested in being perfectly faithful to reality. My main interest is in getting as satisfying an image as possible. As always, please zoom

This picture is a true beauty and full zoom gives it that something extra. Brilliant photography and why not get rid of the unwanted! Would like to see what it would be like in B&W!!

Really wonderful image. I can see why you'd go back there. As far as the trash can, I don't think how you arrive at an image is as important as the image it's self. The end result is what everyones sees and that's what it's about, Sharing your images with others. :)

I've never been to the Netherlands, but have dreamt of the place from the art that came out of there, the culture, and because of scenes like this. Lol on leaving the trashcan in the thumbnail: I saw it, and you know what? I actually liked it! But in zoom (a must with me), it would be an intrusion, there's no doubt. Removing it is part of photography, I think. I mean, when I studied what the photographic masters did for decades, ie, how much they manipulated light & dark, how they 'textured' both in the darkroom (Ansel Adams turned night skies into undulating silk, for god's sake, and out-and-out admitted how much the darkroom changed his photographs), and so on, what's to say removing a trashcan is "cheating"? What's significant is your dramatic POV, the sweep created by the right-side crowding right up against us while the left side sweeps away with ease. The light, which is almost all-encompassing---a kind of light I'm told is common in the Netherlands. And the way the light plays off the buildings & turns the canal into reflecting silver (almost). In fact, there's a kind of silverish tone throughout. A dramatic and scintillating capture of a very "netherlandish" street; and very clear & silvery too. Vermeer would approve, I think! (Btw, it would be great if you put up an upload with a lawsuit from the trashcan. A little comedy for those of us lowlifes who've done photographic surgery at one time or another...)
