Description

Happy Birthday Renecyberdoc. From one survivor to another. NOWHERE MONTANA I remember this morning in Montana. We were on a road trip. As was our bent in those days we would drive until we were too wasted to go on and then throw up our tents in a ditch or clearing on a side road to the highway we were travelling on. We were never too proud to just sleep on the ground, in a Ponderosa pine covered woodland, a farmer's field, heck sometimes even in a gravel pit! We travelled light and lithe in those days. My body was not yet so fractured from so many bad bike crashes and falling off one too many cliff faces. My body was still pretty whole; although sometimes trips like this didn't help any. The next morning, we would get up, often with splitting headaches from hangovers earned from drinking too much cheap Coors with the cowboys in some small town honky-tonk club. With no campgrounds, let alone hotels, to be found at 2:00 AM we slept were we could. Somewhere in the middle of nowhere Montana. There is that distinct sticky sound when cars zoom by on an asphalt highway still fresh and wet from a recent light rain or drizzle. Do you know it? We hadn't noticed the rain that night, but in the morning I woke to see the drops of moisture clinging to the roof of my tent. I could smell the sweet stench of wet earth. And I could hear that buzzing whir as the tires grabbed onto the rain soaked road. They sucked up the moisture and then quickly spit it out again into the air hugging the highway. The resulting mist glowed in the weak light of the cold morning air. Can you see it too? Somehow I had enough sense to grab my camera, step out of my tent and capture that blue morning moment. Then we quickly packed up our gear and we were gone; desperately looking for a coffee, somewhere in the middle of nowhere Montana.

Nicely done and written Roxy. I've been in Nowhere Utah and it's about the same - just different scenery. I love that sound of wet tires on the road after the rain. Even better if there are crickets chirping too. Beautiful image.

I was on foot from San Jose,CA all the way to Okla. I did not sleep however for 56 hours.too hot as back then not many cars had ac.hitch hiking the only ac was 4/60 outstanding capture and dedi

Excellent atmospheric image to match the narrative, or maybe the other way around. I did so many road trips with bands as an audio engineer, they blur together. We managed to stop and smell the roses from time to time. Or whatever was smelling at the time, it was usually better smelling than us...usually. That brings back so many memories. Like in Nevada with signs that say State Penitentiary xx Miles - Do Not Pick Up Hitchhikers.

Dang, Roxy...... Falling off cliffs??? We shoulda hung out when we were younger.. I had a habit (long ago when I was in the Boy Scouts) of just climbing up a cliff face freehand just to see what was up there. There are a few ex-scoutmasters out there with white hair because of me... Never fell off one - just lucky, I guess.. :-D You are one talented lady, you know that, don't you? Not only are your renders top-notch, your photography is superb, and your writing is excellent, too. What a wonderful dedication for The Doc!

I have seen a few people (although not too many) who could put together one simple image but a picturesque description. You are definitely one of those who can give life to your photo with all those descriptive words. So amazing! I like the blue filter and it makes me feel that I was there too.

Thank you Jenny for the kind words. But actually it was shot in the one year I was using Fujichrome rather than my beloved Kodachrome 64 (remember Paul Simon - "kodachrome, gives nice bright colors, the warmth of summer"?). Fuji turned things blue compared to the warmth of Kodachrome. I've always regreted that year of experimenting. Thank the Gods for Photoshop, it can fix a lot. But blue does kinda work here :-)

I can hear it, see it and remember the feel of the damp air and mist upon my skin. I remember to the smell and taste of the air on a morning such as this. Wonderful capture and commentary. (So many senses and memories you have awakened.)

What a beautiful capture and wonderful dedi Roxy. This is something I had always wanted to do.Get behind the wheel of a car or bike and just take off. Letting the roads take me where they may. Here as I enter my 50's and at a place in my life where I am able to. This is what I plan on doing.
