Description
Layne Thomas Staley was the lead singer and co-lyricist of the rock group 'Alice in
Chains’, who formed their band in Seattle, Washington 1987 with guitarist Jerry Cantrell.
Sadly, drug addiction took over, as so many succumb to, and we lost another great voice
ten years ago this week. They claim it’s not clear if he left us on this day in April 2002
because Layne was estranged from his family and friends, most of them felt it best to
give him his space after many failed attempts to help his situation. They found him shortly
after his passing though. I've read a few books on Rock Stars. Many of us have stereotype that they will automatically fall to this fate and say it’s stupid they got into these situations and don’t get themselves out, but many honestly do try to find help and there ARE some who have succeeded. A select few never have had issues with it, more power to them. Many are just so far 'gone' by the time they realize it is a problem and it doesn’t matter what is done to help. I also want to point out, (not being judgmental, just stating a fact) that MANY of these so called Rehab clinics these patients have entered for help are nearly as bad as if they were out on the street. In all of the books I've read, some sort of drug has been smuggled into the rehab center and no one is the wiser, you tell me who
is failing. In one book I read the "patient" actually heard this can happen and tried it. Sure
enough, a female patient there snuck out a bathroom window, went six blocks, got two
balloons of heroin, and brought them back and...Well you see my point. If a kid is offered
a piece of candy they more than likely will take it. If an adult is offered that 'one last
cigarette' they are likely to take it. Not everyone, I'm just saying many can’t resist after
being so long with drug sickness. I’m not justifying doing drugs, I’m just saying peer
pressure is not just at the local elementary school. The pressure of being famous can be
immense...everyone needs an outlet even if your just a regular person in a regular Town
in a regular house etc. I chose this song because Staley wrote it about his drug addiction.
Side note, he also lays blame on his biological father for reasons I won’t go into for this
drug addiction. I'm pointing it out since it is in these lyrics...thank you for reading. Thank you for all your comments on my previous
posts. I meant to do an image in DAZ for Layne, but some not so fun things came up this
week and I've just not had the time or mind set to do one, sorry for that. This image is
from the internet. If I have it in the wrong category, I'm sure someone will let me know.
'Hate to Feel' by Alice In Chains
Partial lyrics:
"What the hell, gotta rest
Aching pain in my chest
Lucky me, now I'm set
Little bug for a pet
New Orleans, gotta get
Pin cushion medicine
Used to be curious
Now the sh**'s sustenance
All this time I swore I'd never
Be like my old man
What the hey it's time to face
Exactly what I am
I can see, yeah - (wish I couldn't see at all)
I can feel - (wish I couldn't feel at all)
Hate to see - (wish I couldn't see at all)
Hate to feel - (wish I couldn't feel at all) "
Layne Staley – lead vocals, rhythm guitar
Jerry Cantrell – vocals, lead guitar
Mike Starr – bass
Sean Kinney – drums

a well thought out piece of writing there Rose. Drugs are a problem of epidemic proportions today, and looking at the fates of those who have succumbed makes a very pointed statement about the state, not just of the union, but of the world. So many people start using them through peer pressure, or as an "escape" albeit temporary. Most tend to slip into a spiralling self-destructive course. Thanks for the info, and the obvious research you have put into this.

Heard of the band through my sons cause this is the music they listen to...As for myself....never listened to them personally...I'm stuck in the 60's..70's and 80's classic rock myself. Not saying they are bad or good...just never listened to them personally....You've created a solid tribute here!... Nice Work Rose!

Excellent... Great writing.. Really, really good! Almost as if you were writing a book on Rock Stars and Rehab.. Well done hun.. I have read books on Rock Stars Bio's.. The 'worse being the tragic tale of Phil Lynott. A man surrounded by drug pushers and addicts, and despite him knowing he was dying, could not lose thm or get help.. They killed him, they would not leave him be.. He died in his Mothers, Philomena, arms.. Awesome words, your tragic if essential series continues. Rob

sometimes we forget that people... all people are only people, not gods, not angels, not superheroes... we fight as to the best of our abilities, and sometimes, our abilities aren't enough.... your words are a warm reminder of our frail humanity, our frail existence...

Very well done Rose I personally can say I have never heard of the group or him, I too and a 60's 70's music fan and never been into the heavy rock stuff.. But its so true how drugs have taken many "famous" people from this world..

Great tribute and very true words, especially on the rehab thing. Some just have such little interest in getting people real help. And I can't believe it when they treat addiction with more drugs. What is that. I'm no innocent, but I know my line and limit and keep a nice space before that limit. Having been in the music biz I've seen my share of stuff passed around. For the most part I would pass on offers, but some just can't say no. Now, as the manager of liquor store, I've seen people's habits grow and take them over. Some level out or cut back and a few quit and you never see them again. Others don't quit and you never see them again. Some days it's hard to keep my mouth shut and twice I've said something. One person later thanked me, the other I never saw again. I wonder if he quit, goes somehere else now, or worse. Everyone has to live their life I guess. In my experience, drugs/alcohol are the gun, it's usually the person's personality combined with life situations that do them in. Once they've gotten physically addicted, they are usually trapped and the tragedy is when they want help, but have fallen so far. I always believe in hope, though, and a second chance.
