Description

A squirrel hanging out on my deck. They're usually skittish around here - not like city squirrels - but this fellow hung around for quite a while, even after he spotted me a few feet away. He turned to face me after a while & we had a long staring contest, during which he didn't move a muscle for several minutes. One of our cats eventually crept up & he scampered away. It's odd how people relate to rodents. Squirrels & chipmunks are thought of as cute by many people but are rarely domesticated. Though I did have a friend back in college who found some orphaned baby squirrels once & raised them. When I would go over to her house & sit on her couch, they would scamper onto my shoulders & were very playful. Mice & rats are looked at in fear or disgust by many people, but they also are common pets & often domesticated. And hamsters are very similar to mice in appearance, yet most people think they're cute. Does the bushy tail of the squirrel seem cuter than the skinny, snakelike tail of the mouse or rat? Do we dislike mice & rats because they travel in packs & raid our homes, whereas squirrels & chipmunks rarely venture into houses? And why do some people find all forms of rodents revolting? I'm off on a short road trip with friends today - back next week with more photos to share... Please zoom

I have to confess - I'm one of those who dislikes mice & rats, but thinks squirrels are cute. Especially this one! And you really took a sweet portrait of the little guy with each and every follicle of hair delineated. Beautiful!
