Stained Light by KatesFriend

Happy Easter everyone. Or, as my Catholic friends like to put it, "the return of choc- er, the end of Lent - yeah, that's it". Looking at some of these spiritual works that I do, one might assume a tremendous devotion to faith. Alas, not so, I am rather indifferent to religion. I have my reasons which are numerous but religion, or at least its artifice, does provide environments of striking beauty and colour. I suppose that is what is so attractive to me. In any case, me and the Pontiff, we have some unfinished business if you know what I mean. Sometimes when I'm at a loss for imaginative content (sorry to all you fans of my Encyclopedia series, I'm a little dry right now) I turn to a technical challenge. The effect of light through coloured or stained glass is impossible in Poser and only slightly less egregious to fake. As such, I had been eager to try the effect out in Vue as Vue is supposed to filter light colour through a coloured medium - sic aiunt. I will say that the effect is doable, but the implementation was almost as challenging as faking the effect in Poser. A little secret; most of my renderings require several iterations before I am content to consider a project complete. An occupational hazard as I am always want to do something new or in a different way. Believe me, it doesn't often come off easy - this rendering in particular required forty-nine (49) tries to get passable. There is of coarse the translation of Poser objects into Vue. And, if you look closely, you will see that flaws are clearly present and could not be well corrected. I had a devil of a time getting the girl's (Valenzia for V3 by Bice) skin to not appear like, well, the Lunar surface. Tip 1: Watch out for and tone down gradient bump maps when importing Poser scenes into Vue. Tip 2: Import Poser scenes in pieces. Apparently, there is a limit of 127 textures which can be imported at once. Beyond that and Vue will crash during the import process. And even if the import works, the scene is ultimately corrupted and can't be completely reloaded. Thanks again Sherrie (aka. drifterlee). However, the first rule of a stained glass effect is do not rely on the default Sun light which Vue provides for all new renderings - turn it off. Indeed, do not use that type of light at all. Instead, fake the Sun with the use of an ordinary spot light at high altitude (4km) and sufficient brightness (Power=1750). This type of light will allow you to set Volume characteristics directly in 'Edit Object'. For said Volume characteristics, I used Intensity=5.0 and Quality Boost=10 - a high quality boost is essential otherwise the volume lighting effect looks crappy. I also activated 'Smoke and Dust' in the light beam as well as 'Cast shadows in the Volume'. I played with these details a great deal so, "your mileage may vary" - sic aiunt. As for Atmospheric settings I used the 'Spectral Model' with the Light options set to 'Global Illumination'. Anyways, thanks for coming out and taking a look. And may I wish everyone here at Renderosity a happy and fun Easter. I have to admit, I really enjoy painting eggs. Enjoy your chocolate guys.

This is a stunning work of art Clayton, really inspirational indeed. One doesn't have to be religious to appreciate the beauty contained in many of the symbols of the various religions

A beautiful, well-crafted image, Clayton. Thanks for the image and for the POSER into VUE tips. I usually do landscapes in VUE or TERRAGEN. One of these years, I just might attempt it. I wish you both an Easter and a year ahead, full of peace, joy, assurance of eternal life, awe, wonder and new horizons of creation. I thank God for your gifts. Warm regards, from a damp, chilly Glasgow (last week we had snow, hail, sleet, heavy rain etc. ), John.

Great composition and I love the POV here...like you, I have no use for religion or its often misinterpreted artifice, but ah...when done right, it's a humdinger of a serving of eye candy. The best porn I've ever seen was on the ceiling of a cathedral (they knew how to fill pews back in the old days.) And having said that, I must say that I like this image as well. The intense colors are such a wonderful, eye-grabbing treat, and then there's the more muted aspect of the image. The human figure is almost "overshadowed" but not exactly. She's well within the context of the image and the meaning of the image, but the main focus seems to be on something...not-entirely-substantial, much like light shining through a window. It's substantial, it's there, but it's not something you can just reach out and grab and manipulate with your hands and wonderful, little prehensile thumbs. There's a great amount of playfulness in this image as well and I like that. All-in-all, I have ages of catching up to do, and I'm glad that I can start here.
