Description

Jackals are found all over the Namib desert but especially on the coast north of Cape Cross. Cape Cross has one of the largest seal colonies in the world and with the Atlantic current running south to north, many dead seals are deposited on the beaches which provide ample food for the jackals and brown hyenas. To see them is not so easy though. They hide during the heat of the day and only come out at night to "hunt". Their tracks are found everywhere! WOW! This is one of those shots that just speaks tens of thousands of words! Jackals are amazing creatures. Have you noticed that when you DO see them, they look like they're up to something? Are there Jackal street gangs? Or maybe a Jackal Mafia? One often wonders...but they always look alert and...um...well...vaguely guilty, which makes me wonder why the Ancient Egyptians saw them as moderately divine. Sometimes it's said that the god Anubis is based on a Jackal (other times, he's just attributed to a desert dog.) The only problem is Anubis never looked as potentially, just-caught-in-the-act guilty as Jackals tend to do at times. And what does this have to do with this shot? I have no clue, but there you have it. This is marvelous. I love the composition. And now I'm curious as to whether or not you have any Jackal stories on par with your party-crashing hyena who left and came back with his buddy.

I love the composition! The gray and green together are beautiful, and the jackal tracks are so perfectly clear! I can almost see him walking along the beach. Excellent image!

I have a plant like that growing in my garden because it is great as I don't need to water it. Oh what amazing paw prints they are too, I thought it was a dogs at first until I read the intro. Such a great capture, here. Looks like you took this picture out from an helicopter, and if that green are all trees, Carin. It frightens me a bit when I read about Jackals, it sounds dangerous, isn't it.
