Description

Close to sunset... somewhere high over Vunakanau airfield, south of Rabaul, New Britain January 6th 1942 It must surely count as a "Tora Tora Tora" moment. After bombing the airfield from 12000 ft, the crew of nine IJN Type 97 flying boats found themselves dogged by a single jazzed-up "Harvard" - a Wirraway (cough!) "fighter." Of the four Wirraway pilots of No. 24 SQ RAAF who'd managed to scramble from the cratered airstrip, Flight Leutenant Bruce Anderson was the only one able to engage any of the quickly withdrawing flying boats. It was a stretch to make it that far. He appears to have damaged his plane's engine in the process. With this action, the beleagured "Few" in the RAAF fired their first shots in the "Battle of New Britain." Rendered in Vue 8 Esprit Kawanishi Type 97/H6K4 flying boat and CAC Wirraway advanced trainer modelled in Shade 10.5

Terrific modeling!! I bet that was a thrill to come up on a large enemy formation flying an (advanced trainer) even if it did have a gun or two. Very nice job!
