Description
It gets to be a blur as to whether we stay up real late, or get up real early, but it's the best time of the night. When it's silent, except for the occasional hiss of a car. The newspaper trucks aren't out yet and the cops are sitting quietly in their cars on side streets, eating doughnuts and drinking coffee, hoping nothing happens for the rest of their shift. You can stand at an open window and if you hold your breath, you can hear absolutely nothing for a few long seconds and then an air conditioner turns on, or someone nearby coughs, or another car passes by and you wonder what their story is and where they're headed. You grab another refill and wait for the start of another day.

Think your first sentence above is a classic, Dave. Certainly reflects my own feelings and habits at this time in my life. You also could have said that the music on the radio or the streaming music channels of our computers seem much better in the middle of the night. Sometimes, I stay up simply because I just want to watch the night turn into day.
