Description
Florida has a population of Manatees (commonly called sea cows) between 1,000 and 3,000. They are plant eaters that can reach an average of 900 to 1200 pounds (400 to 550kg). The elephant is their closest living relative. They can grow up to 9 or 10 feet (2.8 to 3 meters). They prefer warm, shallow, coastal waters and as many as 300 are killed, by boat propellers, each year. In colder weather, they congregate in the areas around power plants to take advantage of the warm water discharge. This photo taken, in late 2002, through a glass wall (sorry about the glare), at Sea World, Orlando, Florida, with my old Pentax and recently scanned. Some info was taken from Wikipedia. Zoom helps a little.

Dana, the manatee has been a pet project of mine for over 29 years. I visited Homosassasa Springs (http://www.citruscounty-fl.com/menu.html),stood on the platform and fed them by hand, watched the young swim to the edge of the water and watch me, just as I watched them. They are so amazing and the feeling of connection between us and them, and now and our prehistoric past is enough to humble anyone. I love this shot. A bit prettied up, the reality is not as pretty, but at least it lets everyone know these gentle creatures exist only as long as we allow it.
