Description

Podiceps nigricollis. Found at Kennedy Park, Tucson, Arizona, USA. There was a total of 9, 8 in breeding plumage, one not. They were swimming in a tight group with an occasional straggler, and occasionally they would fly short horizontal distances or dive together. Michel uploaded a photo of Eared Grebes he got at Marais d'Harchies, and at the time, I wistfully noted that we never see them in breeding plumage here. Little did I know I soon would! What a wonderful surprise! Notice there are subtle color differences, but they are considered the same species.

I might have seen them before in town. A gang of beady, red-eyed young punks - I quickly walked to the other side of the street!!
