Description
Volume I - Episode 71
Where: Melbourne, Australia
When: 17 days after E-Day, 2:43 pm
"Hit 'em, Dan!" Nikki was screaming. "Hit 'em!" There was a metallic clank! as the police car slammed into the BMW's rear end. "Hit 'em again!"
Daniel backed off, then obediently gunned then engine and rammed the BMW again. And again. The mood inside the police car was electric.
"Hit 'em again!"
"No!" Ken shouted.
"Shut up! Do it, Dan!"
Daniel, amped up with excitement, pulled the police car into the right-hand lane and bumped against the BMW's rear-right quarter.
The driver of the BMW screamed and lost control. The car shot across the median strip, turned sideways, and rolled. Once, twice, three times it rolled. The road ahead disappeared beneath a cloud of smoke, dust and sparks.
"Oh, wow," Nikki murmured. "Oh...wow..."
In an instant, the mood inside the police car had turned from excitement to shock. All four occupants stared open-mouthed at the twisted, smoking wreckage of the BMW behind them. Broken glass and ruined machinery lay all over the road.
"Fools," Ken said, sounding furious. "Look what you've done."
"I didn't even hit them that hard," Daniel protested. "She shouldn't have..."
"Idiot!" Ken hissed. "What did you think would happen? Stop the car. Stop! Now!"
Daniel turned the car around and brought it to a halt a short way from the wreckage. A small fire had started in the BMW's undercarriage. Oil and petrol was leaking everywhere.
"Ken..." Nikki started, but Ken was already out of the car and running toward the wreck.
Nikki, Daniel and Richo watched him go in stunned silence. Ahead of them, a second small fire had started on the road near the BMW's shredded rear window.
"Should we help?" Daniel asked.
Nikki chewed her lip, thinking. Her plan was ruined. The two girls would be either dead or far too injured to take back to the shopping centre now. But at least some good might come from this: the pool of petrol around the BMW was growing, and Ken was headed straight for it.
"No," she said. "It's too dangerous."
Let them burn.
