Description
These walls can be found all over Australia, especially on the beaches. 'The Susso' is an Australian slang term referring to "sustenance" (welfare) payments. The walls were built during The Great Depression. They stop erosion and stabilize coastal areas, but their main purpose was to provide work. Work to honest men who were desperate to feed their families. These walls are nearing 100 years old, but just look at the care the men took to build them. Every stone was sorted so that it fit perfectly with those that surrounded it. My late father grew up during The Great Depression, and often told me stories of how tough things got. The walls still make me think of how easily fortunes change in life.

Great picture and information Andrew! Obviously they men who built those wall knew what they were doing and maybe they took extra care in their construction to prolong their employment. I didn't see any of these walls on my recent visit. If i had know they existed I would have looked for them! great post.

Wow. Wonderful narrative. At least they were prepared to work, over here 'some' just expect the money for nothing!

Nice shot from an unusual perspective. In the U.S. during the Great Depression, we had the WPA (Works Progress Administration), which was a government agency that put millions of people to work on public projects. Today, in this country, during a severe recession in which large numbers of workers are unemployed & much of our public infrastructure is deteriorating, one of our political parties blocks every effort by government to shore up our infrastructure & create jobs - labeling it "socialism", which they regard as the ultimate evil. End of rant...

Superb capture my friend. Amazing work done by those who worked on this wall. God Bless.

Yes they were honest. They worked hard and well, earning every penny, with pride and courage and not just pretending to work, as do many now.

They are put together like a jigsaw puzzle. Those walls were built by a generation that had pride in themselves and the work that produced those walls. It is good to remember those times of struggles. There is a lesson her Andrew and you have planted the seeds for the future!
