Description

We (the Arizona Department of Water Resources)were asked by the Navajo Nation to inventory their agricultural related water uses so they could get their Federal Water allocation from the Colorado River. We were given carte blanche access to go anywhere and take as many pictures as necessary, with a caveat, no personal pictures. Three and sometimes four teams took about 6 months to complete the job. The Navajo Nation is the largest Indian Reservation in the United States and is made up of a collection of chapters. To find the agricultural plots, often small and not easily discernible on aerial photography, we visited individual chapter houses, identified by flying a U.S. flag, and gathered information. At the Nazlini chapter house we found out that amongst other irrigated uses there was a small plot of corn, irrigated with water from Nazlini Creek, up the canyon. This picture shows our progress up the canyon, and about 1 1/2 miles upstream (in 4x wheel drive) we found what we were looking for. A diversion, a dirt ditch, and a recently harvested corn field, about one acre in size. We measured everything with a GPS (base station corrected, i.e. sub-meter accuracy) and slowly made our way back down, occasionally stopping to take pictures of the scenery. Having sat at a desk for 35 years, it's hard for me to imagine your job! Too much math and science for me, anyway. Still, it's fun to hear about and great to see this photograph of one of your expeditions!
