In failing light, the destroyers of Task Force 17 open fire at orbiting "hostiles" while USS Yorktown recovers the last of the F4F Wildcats that ambushed and scattered Admiral Takagi's now aborted strike. Fletcher's carriers were close enough to observe the passing Japanese squadron on radar and intercepted them with fighters, seemingly out of "nowhere," downing seven torpedo bombers and one dive bomber, and mortally damaging an eighth "Kate." Three Wildcats were lost. The crews of some passing "Vals," now exhausted, and having already jettisoned their bombs, are briefly confused by the premature appearance of two huge shapes in the gloom below them. Confused that is until the bursting of flak sets them right! What does that feel like? After two days looking for this fleet... They find it NOW...??? Takagi recovered the surviving 18 aircraft from the raid that night, and both sides prepared for tommorrow's cataclysm... May 8th 1942, when the absence of those eight "Kates" would be keenly felt...
