Description

We're back in range after having been in the Hoh rain forest for a few days! This is a bit of moss on one of the beautiful hiking trails. With an average rainfall of 145 inches per year, you can imagine the many varieties of moss in the Hoh. I have no idea what kind this is, but it certainly is fancy! :)

Love the details...great light. Since I took pictures of all the trail signs, I'll see if I can identify what's growing here:) I'll bet the elk nibble on this every now and then.

Beautiful foliage. One of the most interesting things in the photograph is the sunshine - with 145 inches of rain, sunshine is clearly a very rare commodity.

Very fancy moss. First impression made me think of a fern, but when I look I see those spore thingys growing up out of the middle and that gives it away. Great shot, and especially with what seems to be overcast light.

Ooh, I've never seen that one before, how lovely it is! Someday I must get over to the Olympic peninsula, I'm missing out on so much beauty... Wonderful capture, and you managed to capture it from just the right angle to showcase the delicate beauty of the moss!

Something so delicate, gives the appearance of Great-Grandma's crocheted lacework doily's, which you could usually find on the head rest section, of a velvet couch - or I must be dreaming ... very organic and precious find, Tara BB BTW that is some flash looking RV - WOW, does that come with a butler? ;)

you've done a few shots recently of lush undergrowth, moss, forest-floor flowers, etc. And you've used this composition, generally, of an angled foreground, perfectly matched with the opposing corners of the frame; in front of a gentle background behind it all. (Some variation on that...) I don't know that this composition is intentional---it could be your inner eye simply choosing & speaking as it sees fit. But it's beautiful. The term "Rain Forest" intones tropical climes, to many people. But I know there are rain forests in northern climes, as evidenced by your trip. But it's still a surprise to my stereotyped mind...In any case, it seems that the key to these environs is huge density-of-growth contained in compact areas/colonies; and wonderful diversity in these areas, as well. (I imagine if this were tropical, you'd see huger plants spread everywhere.) In any case---my amateur guesswork aside---the compact nature of these patches makes them incredibly intense & rich, and that's what you've captured with an eagle-eye. Your angle splits the view into perfect halves, where the background feels large & more open (it has some beautiful luminous blue branches which stand out as counterpoint to this largely green/yellow & reddish symphony). But the 'star' of the shot is the ridge of moss in foreground, which you've made luminous & mysterious, with the lower portions of the moss receding into these reddish enclaves and (ultimately) into deep shadow. A simple piece, but perfect, and quite beautiful. All your "diagonal" shots of growth, this last month or two, have been beautiful. (I'm only doing 1 or 2 comments per, right now, and it will be that way for a few more weeks. But at least I can return here and share some of the thoughts I've had inside myself, over the last month...)
