Description

Happy Birthday, Tara (auntietk)! As Tara, my science fiction writing partner, is primarily a photographer by artistic trade (check out her wonderful gallery here), I thought I'd take a break from science fiction to honor her coming of age (about time too!) with this is a photograph, taken in the Cedarberg mountains about 300 km north of Cape Town. And because she's a very special friend I thought I'd give it some special treatment, so I personalized and "rusticated" it in PostworkShop. (Please zoom for detail). I know this is a day late, but it just means you'll have to continue the celebrations for another day... Craig PREVIOUS: Quantum biology

Thank you, my friend! I love the soft colors ... what a gorgeous palette ... and your postwork is perfect. Such a misty, marvellous mood. (That's one short of MMMM, but I wasn't trying, so don't judge me too harshly, okay?) :P This was worth the wait, and I didn't mind at all! I'll make sure Bill knows my birthday is going on for at least another day. That means he has to do the cooking again. Yay! :)

When tara had her birthday, I wasn't commenting because of my hands (not serious, just a chronic matter that has to be tended to every few months, from older injuries). So while I posted for her, I didn't comment on anyone else's post, even though I saw them all. Well, I'm commenting on yours now! The only one in fact (in the spirit of extended birthdays---which I'm all for, btw!) Your treatment not only has surrounded your sweeping photograph with mist and rain, but it's given it a 'graphic' look, like it's made on special paper (in fact, like one of the many oriental papers used in their printmaking). In fact, it looks like a print, with that special magic that prints have all to themselves. The whitish/light-hued grain that permeates the whole not only evokes mist & coming rain, but it allows the paper itself---to follow my analogy---to speak through the image: That's central to some printmaking. But on a deeper aesthetic level, it means there is the image, and there is a 'ground'---ie, a base upon which everything rests. Like a deeper reality behind it all. That's truly how this feels to me. Historically, the interaction of image with its ground (paper, canvas, etc) was key to the early Modern movement, because the artist was giving more & more attention to paint itself, to ink, dyes, etc etc. They were moving away from the 'illusion' of a representation and into the immense life of brushwork, penwork, etc etc. But something else is inherent in that act: discovering that the canvas is like a great 'parent', something that holds and gives life to the image, because it's the thing that 'hosts' the image. Even older artists allowed the backing to speak (Rembrandt and others used the canvas's 'language' as part of their vision). But in some artists' hands, the mingling of backing with image is actually cosmic; it admits something 'behind' it all, which holds & permeates the work of art itself. Well, I don't know that you had such things in mind consciously, here; but knowing what I know of your heart, I wouldn't be surprised you felt something like that as you did it, that the 'mist & rain' are also a hint of the cosmos itself, as it whispers through the image. That feels totally right for you, and equally for Tara. Because the softness and the feel of inner reality seeping into your landscape is one of Tara's strengths as an artist---so it's more a Tara image than just a gift: It evokes a part of her. Beautifully done, gentle and inviting. And, for the Northern Hemisphere, a perfect May image, because here, early May means lots of rain leading to an explosion of life. Beautiful.
