Description
The Savoia-Marchetti SM.79 Sparviero,Italian for Sparrowhawk was a three-engined Italian medium bomber with a wood and metal structure.Originally designed as a fast passenger aircraft, this low-wing monoplane set 26 world records that qualified it for some time as the fastest medium bomber in the world. It first saw action during the Spanish Civil War and flew on all fronts in which Italy was involved during World War II.It became famous and achieved many successes as a torpedo bomber in the Mediterranean theater. The SM.79 was an outstanding aircraft and was certainly the best known Italian aeroplane of World War II.It was easily recognizable due to its distinctive fuselage dorsal hump and was well liked by its crews who nicknamed it Gobbo Maledetto 'The Damned Hunchback'.It was the most widely produced Italian bomber of World War II,with some 1,300 built, remaining in Italian service until 1952.
My enforced absence from 'The Plant' has led to more viewing than posting at Rendo.I have noticed the excellent and popular models being produced by Pedro Caparros and available free at ShareCG.Like me, he has an eye for the less readily available aircraft....Pedro recently included my A1 Skyraider in one of his images, so it seemed only fair to return the compliment.
A straggler returning to base is about to come under the cannons of a Desert Airforce Hurricane of No 213 Squadron based at El Alamein.
I managed to keep 'Tailspin' occupied for a couple of hours, repainting Pedro's SM-79 for Italian desert service.

Awesome image neil and you are right about Pedro, he's building some great planes that no one else is. Unfortunatly I find myself in the same position. I've just started a new job which is taking up a lot of my time. So i'll be posting less for about a month.

Good to see you post again mate - it's been a while for sure. Thanks for the informative upload, this is one aircraft I knew nothing about at all! I guess Turkey beckons too eh?

Nice one Neil. Your regular presence and posts are greatly missed here. Nice to have you pop in with another fine render!

Thanks Neil! Great information and great illustration. Even if you can't do an image a day as before, don't worry. Let it take the time it needs. When you get the time to post it, GREAT! Glad to see you got the time for this! As you may notice, I'm not posting daily, either. A lot of stuff to do (scheduling, planning, teaching, etc...). So I'll be posting sporadically, too. Glad to hear things are OK at the plant. And Tailspin's been up to some good! Best to keep him busy and out of trouble! My, I just bought 2 bottles of Guiness (last time was 1 year ago) - so, here's CHEERS to you! :-)

Welcome back, Neil, good job as (almost) always. It really is not having an eye for fewer aircraft available, but the period that most interests me, the Spanish Civil War, is little known and there are few models available for free. Some sources cite up to 150 types of aircraft involved in the conflict between the two sides. Much remains to be modeled. I'm glad you saw my last picture, with my model of the MiG-19 "anatomically correct" with 2 jets. Although I have published recently, I started modeling because I did not like your early model MIG-19. But with many of your models are good and learn from them. Thank you very much for the dedication. Pedro

Your back in the groove mate! Well done.

Is that the African or the European Sparrowhawk...? Thought of Monty Python for a moment there. All I can say, that if thats a "sparrowhawk" they must have big "sparrows" in Italy... ;-) A great paint job on the trimotor... and the interception scene.

the planes are fantastic with their textures and the aerial works so well

Thats a great one Neil.

A fine render, Neil! Sorry to be so slow on this one. May I make the suggestion that it would be nice for you to share that texture of the Gobbo Maledetto? I know Pedro supplied an Italian scheme but I like yours better.
