Description

Shiprock is located southwest of the Town of Shiprock in New Mexico, and is called by the Navajo people 'Rock with Wings' or 'Winged Rock' and has great religious and historical significance in their culture. Shiprock is composed of fractured volcanic breccia and black dikes of igneous rock called 'minette'. These dikes radiate away from the central formation. The exposed rock probably was originally formed 2,500 to 3,000-ft (750-1,000m) below the Earth's surface, but it was exposed after millions of years of erosion. Radioactive dating of the minette indicate that they solidified about 27 million years ago. The central peak rises 1,583-ft (482.5m) above the surrounding terrain and has a peak elevation of 7,177-ft (2,187.5m) above sea level. This picture was taken on 5 November 2003, Sig...

in 1973 or 74 I worked there at Shiprock town at a Gibson's store.I was in awe of the Shiprock and when Jock and I went on the road trip, I made sure that we passed there.you must have been off the beaten path to get this pov. they are very protective of the area with no trespassing signs every where
