I have travelled to this place so many times that I can almost walk all its paths in my head and can feel the quiet beat of its rhythms when I close my eys. For anyone interested in medieval architecture in Britain, it is a fount of ever-springing knowledge. The Weald and Downland Open Air Museum is located in Sussex. Its fifty acres houses a collection of nearly fifty rescued houses, dating from between the thirteenth to nineteenth centuries. The house shown above is one of the jewels of the collection; "Bayleaf", a (mostly) fifteenth century house recovered form Chiddingstone in Kent. The surrounding garden demonstates the staple home producted crops of the period. The interior displays replica furniture and a typical layout as it might have been around 1540. If you live in Britain or a neighbouring country I urge you to go along and support the valuable restoration projects taking place there.
