Description

I've been a little sporadic in posting the past few weeks, and here's why... My sister is building a dome home, or more correctly, a Geodisic Dome Home...and her husband, her friends, my brother and I are helping, when we can. never built one of these puppies before, an experience it is... but needed. Backstory time.. two years ago, this summer, the Dams broke, flooding thousands of acres, not only in southeastern Alberta, but also Southwestern Saskatchewan...my sister and her family got flooded out.... badly. Why did the dams break, you may ask.... go ahead, ask.... glad you asked... the dams were very, very old, in need of serious repair... how old were they? they were soooo old that the government didn't even know that they were there... forgotten for decades... seems they were built as part of the watershed in the 1930's... and forgotten... luckily nobody was killed in the flood, but a lot of people lost everything... houses, farms, livestock... Fly in a lot of government officials to say that this was a tragedy, and that something had to get done... yadda yadda yadda... but instead of handling the matter as a government, they hired a firm to oversee the costs and the rebuilding, and the compensation... and the contract for the company asked that they come in under budget,..waaay under budget... hence the two years taking to start the house.... The house is going up easy, just working part time, we should have it ready for live in soon, say a couple of weeks.... building this thing has been fun, a kit from Timberland Homes... goes together like tinkertoy.. strong, durable, seriously energy efficient (which in this province is akin to witchcraft), and stylish... most of the people in my sister's town are very supportive... except for one guy... he don't like hippies, and this is a hippy kind of place.... (yes he wears a black cowboy hat) so this s why postings and commenting may take a while out of my life...nothin' personal, y'unnerstand.. it's family... comments welcome, please enjoy!

Sorry to hear of the flood, can expect government to be ineffectual. However what a wonderful structure created so far. Thanks for sharing, send my best to the family as you complete it.

I have 'googled' some interesting facts on building a 'Geodesic Dome' quite a few years ago and find them fascinating and while I am on the subject - I also like the fabrications of 'Mongolian Yurts' ... Good Luck and Kudos to your family! BTW in flood-prone areas, here in OZ, we actually build houses on stilts, great idea and it works! BB

fabulous building !! Your family has all my support! Here in Italy just a week ago the government passed a law by which the state does not pay or compensate people who lose everything in a natural disaster (as before). People should purchase a private insurance, but since they have not yet determined by law how much and the red tape needed, those poor people who suffered the earthquake last Sunday and are homeless or in tents, are totally left to themselves. I wonder why you pay taxes if the state then leaves you on the ground after an earthquake.

Glad to see your sister's family will have a home again in a couple of weeks. Two year is a long time. How many square feet of living space will the dome have when completed? Thanks for posting.

that government for you and they most likely is lies about they did not know about the dams. they knew and care less. just like Louisiana levels breaking in New Orleans. Oh they too hire some outsider from another state to take care of all the claims too. it was a waste of money. cool shot and hope it do will be good for them
