Description

This is the third image in my series to reproduce the Original Series Matte Paintings by Albert Whitlock. You can google the original painting by googling starbase 11 and the original painting will come up. Once again, I want to say that Mr. Whitlock is an amazing artist and we (the Star Trek audience) are lucky to have the opportunity to see such great work. I must confess that this so far is the best of the three that I've done. There are about 20,000 rocks in this image as I've had an interesting love affair with the replicator. It's done a good job I think! I've taken just a few liberties with this image in order to get it to work. As is the usual situation with the other two matte paintings I've done, I've had to do the following things to drive to a final product. 1.) The original painting's perspective and lines are not 100% correct. This is particularly true for these round topped towers. I think an artist working with paint on a canvas would have a super hard time getting that correct. Albert did a pretty good job but it didn't line up with my version very easily. In any case though, I think his version and my version came out reasonable. 2.) I'm working off a crummy digital version of a matte painting which I'm assuming was actually pretty big! That means that many of the details in the original painting are fuzzy or confusing in my source material. The result is that I had to guess in some places. 3.) I also didn't stay 100% concerning a few things. The rocks and mountains are chief amongs those things where I've made some adjustments. Also, the lighting in Carrara where things are trying to be a little more realistic are difficult to get the same as the painting where the lighting is 100% controlled by the paintbrush and not by more realistic conditions in Carrara. As an example, there's a dry riverbed in the distance (at least I think that's what it is). In the original painting, it shows up pretty well. In my version, the atmosphere washes it out some. There are also three teensy buidlings way out there in the distance which are lost in my version but are more obvious in Whitlocks version. My original goal was to produce my own flavor of Whitlocks matte paintings for me to print and hang on my wall and I'm feeling pretty good about this one! Enjoy. -Kix
