Description

My Uncle fought in Anzio in WWII. He was one of many soldiers pinned down in an enclave as the Nazis shelled them mercilessly. His stories are astonishing and heart-rending. He fought in France, liberated Buchenwald, was in the French Resistance (as an American) and fought in North Africa, and he always reminded me: "Whether one gave their life or were willing to: Honor them. They all deserve to be remembered..." He spoke of waking after horrifying nights and "seeing the most glorious sunrises in the world. Why do I remember?" he said: "Because Hope broke through the night when we'd given up hope for good..." Today is Memorial Day in the US, but this is for all who've served, everywhere. It's just to say we don't forget what you did, and will remain forever grateful. My honor, respect and love to all of you who've served to help others find liberation, including those who didn't come back as well as those who are still among us. (In my gallery: Our beloved Harry, Bill, Lucinda, Nikolay and Tim, among others. Forgive me if I don't know you all.) My greatest respects and gratitude to all of you, I will never forget Mark (I'll be back soon. Better full size.) (Lake Michigan at sunrise)

Mark, you did an absolutely fabulous job on this Memorial Day dedication. I was very moved by your thoughts about your uncle and the memories he had of fighting the war. What aninsightful man your uncle is my friend. It's not everyone who would look all around during such a troublesome time for signs of hope. This says a lot about him as a person

OH, This is breathtakingly beautiful, Mark and just perfect for a day like this and for your deeply touching story about your uncle. I fully agree with Dave, but my keyboard isnt able to express it so excellently as DaveĀ“s keyboard can ;-) Hmm, maybe I should look after a better keyboard :b Love this sunrise.!!!

Mark, your heartfelt words and this astonishing sunrise are such a perfect tribute to our brave heroes. I have lost dear ones who have fought and given everything, including their lives, so we can all have hope breaking through the night. CC

A glorious new day in your wonderful picture Mark. And your title pulls it all together. Everybody should have an uncle like yours. I'm sure he provided inspiration for the men around him who needed to see hope the way he did. Thanks for remembering with your dedi and sharing your feelings with all of us. Historic note on your image: During WWII thousands of young men saw this same sunrise over Lake Michigan as they trained and qualified to become naval aviators on two in-land aircraft carriers...the USS Wolverine commissioned in 1942 and the USS Sable commissioned in 1943. A tip of the hat this Memorial Day to all these young men of the US Navy too:)

Stunning image of the dawn breaking over Lake Michigan, Mark, plus a most poignant tribute to the many who put their lives on the line in the name of freedom and justice. Anzio was brutal, and we were almost pushed back into the sea. Your uncle was a remarkable fellow, and saw more action than many of his compatriots. I can imagine his reaction to Buchenwald. That said, love the lush rich colors, blends and contrast of the broken clouds and texture of the massive lake below. Thank you for this tribute.

I been reading stories of "God in foxholes" and many other books about how God saved many of them even on both sides of the lines. Many do not say that God was the one that brought them throw it all. But many do say it. anyway this is a wonderful image and thoughts
