Description

This was the oldest hogan we saw while working on the Navajo Reservation. It appears to be a 'circular' or 'female' hogan, in it, the children played, the women cooked, weaved, talked and entertained and the men joked and told stories. Navajos made their hogans in this fashion until the 1900s, when they started to make the hexagonal and octagonal shapes co-inciding with the arrival of the railroad. We had worked all day on the Toh Chin Lini Mesa and it was getting dark. We had made a slight detour to check out an abandoned field and came across this hogan, still on the Toh Chin Lini Mesa. We could not determine whether anyone lived in it, but the droppings of the livestock seemed fairly recent. No footprints were visible. This hogan is 'in the middle of nowhere' since there were no other human habitations for miles. We didn't take too much time checking it out, it wasn't our job, it was getting dark fast, and we had about another 5 miles to four wheel and an additional 10 to 15 miles by dirt road before we hit the highway, and from there about 80 miles to Farmington, New Mexico where we stayed. This picture was taken on 3 November 2003, Sig...

What an interesting find in the middle of nowhere and I guess it is still used as a shelter for whoever is out there at night. It is a lovely capture with the setting sun.

Looks like clay and stone on the bottom half and I had only seen the all wood hex versions before. This is a treet for me!

your shots of this area are very attuned to the magnificent bleakness and deep hues of the soil, the mountains, the stone houses and the sky of this region. A mysterious, looming image, perfect for the time of day, and capturing the massivity and strange beauty of this hogan, accented beautifully by the detritus in the foreground and that mysterious SW sky. Really fine seeing, Sig. This whole series is quite arresting.
