Description
This photo was captured a year ago with the sole purpose of pissing off "photo critics", making them further not like it.
This photo does not follow ANY of the photography rules. No rule of thirds, very little patterns, no ratios, very little dynamic contrast, the composition does not hit any of the points of interests in the frame, none of that. Most people can't relate to it, or even identify what is.
What they don't know is, that's exactly what makes it beautiful, said many artists that saw it for artistic value.
I get wicked like this sometimes. When someone looks through my portfolio and come up to this photo and say "What is that?" then I feel that the photo has done its job. I don't want people to glance at it and identify it right away. I want people to stay where they are, and look at it. Stare at it. Identify what it is after a minute or so.
That's my serious peeve with critics. They're so quick to glance at a photo and not take in the expression or message that the photographer was trying to make clear. And then they say that it's the photographer's fault, as to why the message wasn't clear? ....nnnnnnnnnnooooooooooooooooooo....the critic most of the time, does not see properly.
That's why I LOVE these internet memes where there is a photo with something obvious, but when you look harder in the photo, there is a disturbance of some kind in the photo. Like, one with a woman wearing white spandex with a big rump, but if you look carefully, there is a German Shepherd driving a car. LOL I love it!

Well, I have to say I agree with you about the "critics" and "rules". What I see here is a lovely balanced image. I really like that you went b/w, I dont think this image could have worked any other way. As far as the rule of thirds, I dont think the image would have worked. The pattern of the screen is geometric with the "framework" (I'm asuming a screen door or window screen) is also geometric. The fact that the frame breaks the image in quarters works wonderfully with the screen pattern. I love the light of the background in contrast to the exagerated darkness of the frame and screen itself. And I love the contrast of the newness of the water against the oldness the screen/frame is expressing, let alone the contrast of the round water to the square of the frame and screen. I love this abstract and conventional rules be damned!! You succeeded here in my critical eye!! btw, am I crazy or is there someone standing behind the screen on the left side? It looks like a woman with dark hair??

Actually, that's a tree in the background. When I was working on the photo, it did look like the head of a dark haired woman...and said...yeah, let's keep it. :)

I love this and totally agree with my wife "Varanasi". Critics wouldn't know art if it smacked them in the face and as you stated are quick to judge the artist where it be a movie, music, art or photography. I personally don't agree with the critics half the time. This photo needs more attention, it is an great photo, it should've been discussed more and yes I agree photography rules do need to be thrown out the window from time to time. You can either be a real photographer and make your own path or you can go "baaaaaaaa" (like sheep in other words) and be like every other photographer, artist, musician, or actor/actress out there. Again this photo is great! I think you did a fantastic job on it and I am really shocked that is a tree in the corner. It sooooo looks like a person. In any case, great photo! And I look forward to seeing more from you soon. - Shannon
